16-Year-Old Girl Tragically Dies At Cheer Camp, Parents Warn Others About Her Cause Of Death
A promising future was tragically cut short when Callie Mitchell, a rising high school junior, lost her life while attending a cheer camp at Texas A&M University. The 16-year-old, who was often described as a ray of sunshine, was airlifted to Texas Children’s Hospital after a coach performed CPR on campus. Despite the heroic attempts to save her, Mitchell’s life ended in heartbreak.
As she was preparing to start her junior year at Morton Ranch High School in Katy, Texas, Mitchell’s bright path took a devastating turn. Just days before the tragedy, her parents received a concerning call from a coach asking if Callie had any trouble waking up that morning. Her mother, Michelle Donahue, firmly stated that her daughter had “never” experienced such issues.

With urgency, her parents rushed to the campus, only to learn that CPR had already been administered to their cherished daughter. Michelle Donahue expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the coach, recognizing that without their quick actions, they would have lost the chance to say goodbye.
In a heartbreaking revelation, Mitchell’s father, Scott Donahue, shared that his daughter had long QT syndrome, a cardiac conduction disorder that affects the heart’s electrical rhythm. This condition, which is often inherited, can lead to sudden cardiac arrest. Scott believes that this syndrome likely caused her cardiac arrest, highlighting the critical need for early detection.

Importantly, long QT syndrome can be identified through an electrocardiogram (EKG), a test that is not part of the standard athletic physicals given to students in Texas. In the wake of their tragic loss, Mitchell’s father is fervently advocating for parents to ensure their children undergo EKG screenings.
“For any other parents out there, you know they do physical tests every year. … EKGs are not part of a physical test. … Get an EKG,” Scott emphasized, underscoring the potential life-saving benefits of this preventive measure.

Mitchell’s lively spirit was evident in her passion for cheering, which she embraced from the young age of two. Known for her positivity, she had a special talent for spreading joy to those around her. Her obituary beautifully captures her vibrant personality, her deep love for family, friends, and her beloved French bulldogs. Mitchell’s commitment to her faith and her dream of becoming a child psychologist highlight her extraordinary character.
In the face of tragedy, a mission arises. Callie Mitchell’s story serves as a poignant reminder that promoting early detection and proactive health measures can truly save lives. As the community grieves the loss of this shining star, her legacy calls for action, encouraging parents to take additional steps to protect their children’s health.
